Through the Keyhole
Short film, 13 min, 2023
Through the Keyhole constitutes an exploration of the gaze and the female perspective. It discusses themes of self image, performative behavior, control and how internalized concepts of womanhood influence an individuals behaviour. Inspired by Alejandro Jodorowsky's Psycomagic acts, the film suggests symbolic performances aimed at challenging a reality that often appears rigid to the subjects involved. Through this exploration, we uncover the inherent flexibility - and absurdity - of our reality, thereby challenging our own perception of it.
The work combines live performance elements with documentary-style techniques and traditional narrative storytelling and was heavily influenced by Laura Mulvey's 1973 essay on Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema. Her examination of the pervasive Peeping Tom archetype, characterized by a male character spying on the desirable female character through windows and keyholes, served as both the inspiration for the film's format and content, as well as its title.
